Free GIS & Geospatial Software Page 5 of 9 - Grass, HidroSIG, Health GIS...

Comprehensive collection of GIS software program applications and resources that is updated frequently. Most are either freeware or open-source. They are organized in alphabetical order.

Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL) - GDAL is a translator library for raster geospatial data formats. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats.

Geostatistics and Spatial Statistics including:

* analysing geostatistical data.

* spatial statistics and data analysis utilities.

* analysing point patterns.

* analysing lattice data.

* analysing landscape patterns.

* circular or spherical data.

Geostatistical Analysis package that compliments Geospatial Explorer by providing an interface to the SAGE 2005 variogram reports and GSLIB 2.0 kriging and simulation executables.

GMT is an open source collection of 60 tools for manipulating geographic and Cartesian data sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and producing Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) illustrations ranging from simple x-y plots via contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces and 3-D perspective views. GMT supports ~30 map projections and transformations and comes with support data such as GSHHS coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. GMT is developed and maintained by Paul Wessel and Walter H. F. Smith with help from a global set of volunteers, and is supported by the National Science Foundation. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

GpsDrive is a car (bike, ship, plane) navigation system. GpsDrive displays your position provided from your GPS receiver on a zoomable map. The maps are autoselected for best resolution depending of your position and can be downloaded from the Internet. Speech output is supported if the "festival" software is running. All GPS receivers supported by gpsd should be usable. GpsDrive is written in C with use of the GTK+ toolkit under the GPL license, and runs with Linux, Mac OSX, and FreeBSD.

Grass Geographic Information System - Commonly referred to as GRASS, this is free Geographic Information System (GIS) software used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization. GRASS is currently used in academic and commercial settings around the world, as well as by many governmental agencies and environmental consulting companies. GRASS is an official project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation.

gvSIG is a free open-source tool oriented to manage geographic information. It is characterized by a user-friendly interface, with a quick access to the most usual raster and vector formats. In the same view it includes local as well as remote data through a WMS, WCS or WFS source.

Health GIS Tools and Resources

HidroSIG - A Geographical Information System (GIS) with special tools that will allow you to make estimations and analysis of hydrological, climatic and geomorphological variables.

iGMT: Interactive Mapping of Geoscientific Datasets - This program is intended to make working with the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) easier. iGMT provides a graphical user interface for GMT and is written in the Tcl/Tk computer language. Besides supplying a user friendly way of handling GMT, iGMT comes with built-in support for many different geoscientific data sets, such as topography, gravity, seafloor age, hypocenter catalogs, plate boundary files, hotspot lists, CMT solutions etc.

The Integrated Land and Water Information System (ILWIS) is a PC-based GIS & Remote Sensing software, developed by ITC up to release 3.3 in 2005. ILWIS comprises a complete package of image processing, spatial analysis and digital mapping.
